Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

week two wrap up

The second week of my 12 week cycle ended on Saturday, Jan 21st, and here is my report. Training: I hit two new PRs during the week of Jan 15th to 21st. Mon, Jan 16th, I squatted 5 x 245. Wed, Jan 18th, I deadlifted 5 x 315. These both show that I am continuing [...]

my new year’s resolution: body recomposition

I got six real resolutions, none of which directly impact my training, except that if I can keep them, I’ll be a better athlete and trainee, because I’ll be a better person. Those are between me, my God, and my family. But I’ve got a seventh resolution, that does impact my training. And so I’ll [...]

It’s war

I haven’t been sharing too much about my nutritional struggles on this blog. Let me cut out the BS and just say: I’ve been bad. It’s been six months, and over the past six months, I’ve mainly been bad. Now. It’s getting scary to me. This morning the scale says 198.5 lbs. The pants say: [...]

fried and floating

True confession. Since the school year ended, instead of finding a place beyond the stress of work, instead of finding a place where recovery can be smoother, instead of finding a new space for focus and determination in my program, I’ve been floating, drifting, really directionless. I’ve been staying up nights (working on websites for [...]

weigh-in and updated weight chart

I’ve decided it’s time to update my weight chart and to post my weight and umbilical measurement weekly, as a way of forcing myself to be a bit more accountable about how my diet and level of training affects my body. Today’s weigh-in: 192.0 lbs, down 1.5 lbs from last Sunday.

my anabolism

Yeah, as in, I’ve been getting big. And not in a good way. I’m carrying soft tissue around the middle again. As of Sunday, I was up to 193 1/2 lbs. I’ve gained 8-10 lbs, much of it unwanted. Some is surely lean mass, but mostly, it’s fat. That much should have been evident from [...]

Body Metrics

Sunday, Aug. 15th, 2010. New Training Cycle week I, day I. I realized today that I have not updated my weight chart in three months, since mid May. In other words, I didn’t really keep track of my weight over the summer. I did weigh myself now and then. And what I observed was that [...]

My Year in Body Fat

Thinking about my body composition goals for the 2009-2010 school year, and how I failed to meet them, and what it means for my dietary practice, going forward.

New Year, New Program

It seemed like it was time to put the old program to bed, and to make up a new program. All hail the new program!

Rest Week Reflections

As I enter the last week of my second cycle through the “new plan” (aka the “Never on a School Night” plan), I pause to reflect on, to analyze, and to assess the measurements I have made in the process of my training.
