Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

this is summer

Today CFA announced it’s presenting only “off season” workouts for the next 3-6 weeks, which isn’t going to work well with my “plan apotheosis.” For me, this is the start of summer, and training wise, summer isn’t my off season. Summer, which offers me much greater opportunities for recovery and self-care, is about getting stronger [...]

open sectionals WOD 6 aka super fran!

I missed Monday’s WOD for reasons of LIFE intervening, but I needed the rest anyway. I spent a total of about 6 hours on Saturday and Sunday moving a couple of tons of dirt in my back yard, swinging a pick axe, using a shovel, operating a wheelbarrow. So I was sore sore on Monday [...]

monday and wednesday workouts

Monday at CFA: Hang Snatch, C2B Pull-Ups, High Box Jumps, Wall Balls I was at the 6:00 am class at CFA on Monday April 11th, and, while I didn’t accomplish anything brilliant, didn’t do anything in the way of new PRs or anything, I did my best and had fun working on that most difficult [...]

saturday lifting

Another night of sleep. Blessed sleep. And then, on Saturday, blessed sunshine. I feel my humanity returning. And then, to find myself in the place I want to be: on the black rubber flooring of my gym, surrounded by dedicated athletes and in the company of friends. What could be more pleasing than a leisurely [...]

monday mayhem

No time for details today. Blogging is blogging, not training. (Or working!) Decent sleep, but still not the best. I’ve been getting up at 4:00 am most days to grade papers. But I made it to the 6:00 am class on Monday morning. So… Warm up, then: Dumbbell Lunge squats, at 30×2 tempo, 8 per [...]

hang snatch etcetera

I had an awkward kind of morning at CFA Wednesday. Not sure what’s going on with me lately but it has a lot to do with being overloaded at work. I had no problem completing the strength portion of the workout; in fact I loved it. I worked with Roderick and Rustan on “heavy sets [...]

getting stronger on Saturday

This week turned into an unplanned and not altogether welcome week of rest, but I was by no means inactive. Monday began with an extra rest day, Tuesday was an unplanned rest day, then I did a Wednesday AM workout. But on Wednesday afternoon I was dismayed when a virus laid me low (see my [...]

Made it to the YMCA this morning, with JZ in Child Watch. Spent only about 40 minutes and got a decent workout in. Warm up: ergometer for a couple of minutes, dislocates, mobility, push ups, deep squat holds. Back squat: 5×45 / 5×95 / 5×115 / then: 8 x 3 x 185 @ 180s. Doubtless [...]

Bench, Squat & Pull-Ups: what else is there?

Tuesday lifting session at the Y, about 10:30 am. JZ put up with Child Watch. Thank you Jesus. Better sleep? Not really but I tried. Definitely got my fast in the past two days and am feeling better about the diet. Warm-Up: about 50 seconds on the Ergometer at full blast. Dislocates. Mobility. 15 push [...]
