Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

Going Ape

After a decent, but short sleep, and a one block breakfast, I got to CFA by about ten minutes to six for the WOD, totally clueless about what to expect. It was fun. SO GREAT TO BE BACK. Warm-Up Running H-Drills with side shuffles, low and high karaoke steps, etc. Stretching. Squats (15), Chest to [...]

Old Iron Balls

A “rest day,” with respect to surfing (which basically means my wife asked me to stay home today and help with Lena), nevertheless I got in a killer WOD, based on two recent CrossFit Asheville WODS, from today (Monday, July 20th, 2009) and from Saturday (July 18th). Warm-Up Jump Rope (x20), Push-Ups (10), Jump-Rope (x40), [...]

In the Absence of Ocean Waves

No surfing, but a nice hard workout and a beautiful day for an eerie trip into the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge on my Kayak. Followed by an evening binge on banana ice cream and chocolate.

Iteration and Interruption (PUC 35)

I wanted to call this post “iterruption” but I figured that most people would just assume that I accidentally dropped the “n” in interruption. The word “iterruption” combines interruption with iteration. When I think back about today these two themes, iteration and interruption, dominate my thoughts, and make me think about the how both repetitive [...]

Get Up, Stand Up

Don’t Give Up the Fight I had a great workout today. It was my first real workout in a whole week, since I did “Neoprene” last Tuesday. I gave this WOD a name of my own, even though it is a classic and official “mothership” WOD, because it seems to me that the WOD is [...]

“Anna.” PUC Day 34.

I binged hard on food last night, ending up the day with nearly 3700 calories! In retrospect, this eating behavior was totally unconscious, even though I recall “deciding” to eat more, and then more, and then some more. Such behaviors could prove dangerous to my well being (i.e body fat percentage, weight, waistline, and athletic [...]

“No Limits”

Played poker last night with my whiskey-swilling, cigarette-smoking, pizza-scarfing comrades in vice, and I managed to escape with minimal damage (certainly no cigarettes, only two shots of whiskey, and only one slice of Papa John’s Meat Lover’s Pizza — call it a mini-cheat; it did not appreciably throw off the day’s totals). Went to bed [...]

"Alex"

About 6 hours sleep. 1 block breakfast. 6:00 am CFA workout. Warm Up Agility drills; shoulder dislocates; Sampsons; hip-mobility; calf and hamstring stretching; push-ups (15); squats (15); knees-to-elbows (15); pull-ups (medium band assisted, 15). "The Flash"

Slept in a bit, cause I could… Lena didn’t wake until after 7:00. Even with her two wakings between 12 and 1 I managed to get at least 6 hours of sleep. Cleaning around the house, breakfast was lots of coffee and “1.5″ block of food (but actually 1.5p/5f/1.5c). Note to self: that much extra [...]

"Mini Fran." PUC Postponed.

Lousy sleep, only from 1:00 am to 6:30 am. I went to bed before 11:00 pm, but couldn’t fall asleep. Thinking about so many things. But I felt ok in the morning and I jetted off to the 7:00 am workout at CFA. No coffee. No breakfast. Only about 8 oz. of water. So I [...]
