Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

virulent

At 6:00 am on Wednesday I showed up for the WOD at CFA (“Camel Clutch”). This was after 3 days of rest. Sunday was a normal rest day. Monday was a planned extra rest day, which I took in preparation for doing an OPT assessment on Tuesday with Shanna. But Tuesday became an unplanned rest [...]

Friday AM Split Squats and Carolina Fitness Flashback

Friday 6:00 am I made it in to CFA for the WOD (thank God… having some trouble with my training schedule at present) for a third session of the week. I wasn’t fully with-it (sleep, etc., the whole shebang) and yet I was present. I did OK. Skill: Split Squat Using a 20″ box, I [...]

the latest yokeage

Taking training day by day. Today (Tuesday morning) I found 40 minutes or so at the YMCA. JZ did “ok” in Child Watch there (meaning, he cried most of the time). I felt kinda guilty. We’ll keep trying. Plan today was to follow up last Tuesday’s bench press session, work on Pull-Ups, and skip the [...]

The Mondays

CFA 6:00 am, only 5+ hours sleep, fasted of course. Hardly no caffeine (3 oz. iced coffee, maybe?), or Jack3d, etc., though. Case of the Mondays for sure. Not really sure what all was eating me. Not feeling 100%; not even close. Warm-up: jumprope, and ohs squat holds, plus calisthenics Front-Squat 3011 tempo, 5 sets: [...]

fight not bad

Friday morning I arrived at the gym, having totally inadequate sleep, in an exhausted state; I worked late the previous night; then was too wound up to fall asleep. I came in for the sake of discipline, to attempt to maintain a state of “training” when it is clear I am instead “pedagogue.” But when [...]

sick day / light day

A second night of terrible sleep… J.Z. and I both have colds, so he kept waking up, as did I. And my cold is probably worse today than yesterday; I’m losing my voice, I have a scratchy throat and eyes, and runny nose. Damn. At 5:15 my cell-phone alarm clock buzzed, and I turned it [...]

post feast beatdown, aka Bronco

I managed to show up for the 7 am workout at CFA on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Strength was Kettlebell Swings, WOD was “Bronco”, 4 rounds of 2 two-minute amrap couplets, a “turn off your brain and rep it out” slug-fest with 16 minutes of work and 3 1/2 minutes of rest. Warm-Up: 200 meter [...]

Push Jerk plus five rounds of KB swings and box jumps

Warm Up: agility plus mobility; then calisthenics: push-ups (20); pull-ups (10, red band); squats (10); GHD sit-ups (10). Handstand practice. Push Jerk new 5 RM PR 145 … the same as my Push Press. Which tells you I need to work more on the jerk. But all in due time. My left shoulder was bugging [...]

pretty heavy cleans, with swings, knees, elbows, and double unders

Cleans, went for a “heavy set of 2.” Squat Cleans. You know that’s what I mean. 5 x 45 / 2 x 95 / 2 x 115 / 2 x 135 / 2 x 145 / 2 x 155 (+5 lb and +1 rep PR). The WOD For the WOD, I had to sub max [...]

Saturday Beatdown (5k walk/sprint and Carolina Challenge MetCon)

Plan HTFU was in full effect this morning as I did two workouts between 6:30 and 8:30 am; first a 5k walk/sprint (on my usual “Montford Crawl” route) and then, at the 7:30 am CFA class, a few sets of heavy Thrusters followed by the Carolina Challenge WOD. It was a lot of work. As [...]
