Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

I am going to do a daily post at night listing everything I ate that day. Starting with today. I enjoy food. I will be honest about what goes into my mouth.

summer is here (plan apotheosis)

The life of an academic has some real perks, the most obvious of which is the summer break from full time teaching duties. For me, Summer 2011 began yesterday. I guess I celebrated with heavy cleans and some sandbag sprints. Now, on this first rest day of summer, I’m cooking up some plans to revitalize [...]

one of the many benefits of fasting

So, on Tuesday of this week, a rest day, I had an appointment with my physician, Dr. Joshua Bernstein, to do my annual physical exam and get my bloodwork run. I’ll report back in a couple of days when I get the results of the bloodwork and talk about how it compares with my last [...]

Braising, Bone Broths, and Instant Meat Stews

It’s a cold winter, which is a perfect time for cooking low and slow. I just enjoyed an awesome bowl of leftover turkey thighs in a gelatin-rich bone broth: the simplest possible stew, and absolutely delicious. If you aren’t experienced with braising meat, you need to get familiar, and soon. Fatty cuts that are filled [...]

routine and change

After my a three week holiday season of suspended training and extended, serious, and deliberate overindulgence in neolithic favorites (especially sugar, flour, and EtOH), which was followed by a frantic first half-week of getting back to school (that felt a bit like swimming to shore from a sinking vessel in the dark) I am now, [...]

measures

Weighed in today, first time in two weeks. Obviously, the additional carbs in my diet, combined with seriously out of control cheating sessions every weekend for the past three weekends, has resulted in some unintended weight gain. I am about 5 pounds above where I want to be, although most of the gains would appear [...]

My Year in Body Fat

Thinking about my body composition goals for the 2009-2010 school year, and how I failed to meet them, and what it means for my dietary practice, going forward.

New Year, New Program

It seemed like it was time to put the old program to bed, and to make up a new program. All hail the new program!
