Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

Monday’s post-challenge movement

Monday AM, two days after the Carolina Fitness Challenge, although my health was a bit compromised from terrible sleep and questionable nutrition on Sunday, I showed up, and that says something. As is indicated in the comments to the day’s WOD posted on the CFA site, “I MOVED!” It makes me happy. It left me [...]

ninjas getting ready…

At the 6:00 am workout with CFA this morning, the would be ninjas were preparing for Saturday’s contest in badassery… I was there, jack3d up and fed with my aminos and creatine and shit (that’s for you Brian). I also used a chemical sleep aid last night (zolpidem, but who’s counting) in an effort at [...]

Over the Hump

Sometimes, it’s best to leave some fuel in the tank. I felt fantastic after Wednesday morning’s WOD, for two simple reasons. (1) I’d had enough sleep. (2) I knew that I needed a “back off” day and so I took it. I didn’t aggravate anything. Did nothing spectacular, worked nothing too hard, made no new [...]

Hands Hands Feet

Briefly: today’s skill work was handstands (mine seem to be getting better) followed by a curious, hard to describe WOD (see the description on the CFA webpage) combining box jumps and thrusters in a slow ascending and quick descending ladder. On the WOD I used a 20″ box, 85 lbs on the bar (~70% of [...]

Overhead Squat and Normandy D-Day

Another solid strength day at CFA brought me a new 3 rep PR in overhead squat and a chance to “try out” one of the individual WODs from the upcoming CrossFit Games Southeast Regionals. And then, after that, I went and had minor outpatient surgery to remove a big-ole mole on my back. A lovely [...]
