Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

Cold Seal

On this gray, misty, damp morning, the winds were quiet but the sea still looked rather white and forbidding, leftover chop and mess from yesterday. But Sean and I left out of the house at about 6:00 am anyway and headed to Smuggler’s Cove. I was reassured by the tranquil walk down the trail to [...]

Active Rest \• July 4, 2009

Saturday the Fourth of July

My “rest day” has been plenty active, since I did another a 5k run with Johnny C., and have done at least two miles of walking in Seattle’s Green Lake park, pushing the kids in a stroller, and playing around by the water’s edge. We had a nice, cheat-day style lunch at a mexican place, [...]

Family Outing / Green Lake

Short sleep, about 6 hours, from 11:00 to 5:00 am, then a leisurely day that started as a rest day. But seeing as my bro-in-law, John, wanted to go running with me on about a 3 mile route, I knew it wouldn’t be a real rest day. Turned out to be a day of heavy [...]

Rest Active: Walk, Run and Eat

Stayed up too late and was driven to bed too early. My legs are sore today from yesterday’s sprinting and box-jumps. I would gladly have laid around all day with no activity at all. But it was not to be. My old running partner from Chicago grad school days, Alexander Mawyer, is visiting us with [...]

CrossFit Asheville WODS \• June 5, 2009

Hands and Pulls. Chamber Challenge 5k. PUC Day 27.

Went to bed late again, woke up super early, after only about 5 hours of sleep, but feeling OK. Yesterday, thanks to two heavy high-grav beers in the evening, I had way too many carbs and just over 3000 calories… and the scale says I’m up about a pound for the week. I’ve been eating [...]

5k, PUC Day 5

Two low calorie days in a row. Decent sleep last night (over 7 hours). 3 block breakfast. Health in general is good. 5k Run, “The Dog Slide.” Today my own WOD is: 5k for time. My route is “The Dog Slide”, which is a run I like to do in North Asheville. Prior to the [...]

Mineral City 5k, April 25th 2009

I ran the Mineral City 5k yesterday afternoon (website). I did reasonably well! My time was 25:17, and more importantly, I came in FIRST in my age group (40-44). Yes, that’s right. I won! Of course, it’s a small race, and my time was like, 7 minutes slower than the fastest time that day. And [...]

"The Dog Slide:" A 5k Run in Near North Asheville

This is the route I usually practice my 5k on. It leaves from my house and ends up with about a 1/2 mile walk. Description in words: from 41 Elizabeth Pl. to Elizabeth St to Broadway to Weaver, to Merrimon at the Mojo Cafe; go around to Merrimon / Murdock, then up Murdock to Hillside; [...]
