Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

Shortlantis

Second workout back at it. Scaling, and still wearing myself out. CrossFit rocks.

My Lumberjack 20

An account of my painful, extended experience with the Lumberjack 20 (time: 34:43).

Ring Dips and Nicole

Nicole and ring dips made me feel like a weak sister today. I’m not sure why. Could it be the “low carb” days I’ve been eating?

Nancy Boy

My first workout into a new training & eating cycle. We work on single support hang power cleans, which are comically difficult, and do the CrossFit benchmark WOD “Nancy;” my result: 15:18 w/ 65 lbs.

Five by Four at Thirty Five Degrees

Back Squats, and CFA revisits “Inclement Weather,” a WOD I missed back at the end of July. The WOD was well named for this 35 degree morning, as I did five rounds of 400 meter sprints outside in the cold.

animum adeptare

A normal Saturday work-out day is followed by a night on the town with my CFA buds, leading to a wicked drinking binge. Ouch!

Atlantis Revisited

Deadlifts and “Atlantis.” New PRs, but concerns about proper form send me in a new direction.

One Hundred Fifty Burpees and 2400 Meters Later

Labor Day, CrossFit Asheville is closed. The holiday WOD posted by Shanna was not brutal enough for me. I decided to do yesterday’s Mothership WOD instead. I tried to recruit others. Alaska Mike overslept. So did I! But I still went to the track at UNCA and did it. I had arranged with Rustan to [...]

Holiday Obstacles

I don’t get Labor Day off of work. But CrossFit Asheville will be closing on Saturday and Monday since coaches Shanna and Corey are headed to Folly Beach. No complaints. I am sure they deserve a beach break, and all I can say is, I myself have never missed an opportunity to hear ocean waves. [...]

Change

A killer WOD in which I lifted 7,125 pounds overhead and ran 1.25 miles in 21:21. But Daniel appears to have done even more work, in fewer rounds. It’s a puzzle.
