Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

monday full of rage

Shoulder pain is not going to keep me out of the game. I was in on Monday morning early of course. Did the usual. Setting PRs and slowing down old man death. Warm-Up. Yes. Mobility too. Squat: 5 x 45 / 5 x 160 / 3 x 215 / 1 x 255 / 5 x [...]

big monday

renewal

Oh I got a good and early start on Wednesday. I’m feeling good again. Good, for the first time in weeks, and getting back towards 100%. I’d call it 85%+. The danger for me always is, when I feel good I forget to take the best possible care of myself. Going forward, I need to [...]

sick days

Wasn’t going to work out on Saturday. Because I was feeling like death. Pretty sick, really. No sleep the night before, at all. Abused in body mind and spirit. But there I was at open gym. Alone. All alone. And although it had been a freezing morning, by about 10:00 am it was warming up, [...]

the second goal

In recent months, it’s always the same. Wednesdays are my deadlifting days. And now, having just yesterday settled some issues with help from Andrew G — who convinced me that I really have only two goals: first squat 300 and second deadlift 400 — it seems that Wednesday deadlift days are a fundamental part of [...]

a little farm work on saturday

Week IX, Workout D Stopped by ASC at about 11:15 with the kids. Nobody but T-Bone there. Nothing going on. I decided to goof around. Then turned it into a workout. Details as follows: Warm-Up: 5 minutes on the Airdyne Bike Goofing Around: 10 lbs FatGrips DBs, farmer’s carries while skipping, and walking, in lines [...]

sled pulls on saturday and the ‘return’ of my fracking right shoulder

Week VI, Workout D Saturdays are fun at ASC, cause the kids run around, and we all goof around, and make plans for world domination, and usually, we eventually pull sleds and shit. Brian and Jamie and I got our weight bearing movement (aka “loaded carries”) on. I pulled a sled +90 lbs with a [...]

squat progress

Friday I showed up early and got in a decent workout. I’m having a bit of a hard time pacing myself effectively through my available training window; I am often supervising (or at least consulting about) the training of two other trainees during my period. Be that as it may, I’ve been making progress with [...]

a little bit of something is better

than nothing. How especially true if you’re rehabbing an injury. Today I ignored a sore throat and sinus problems and a general malaise and dragged my ass into the gym anyway. But I took it pretty easy. So there. Week VI, Workout B. Today marked 8 weeks from my broken left forearm. The time has [...]
