Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

I’ve been eating a lot of tacos. I love tacos with corn tortillas. I bought some local wild ling cod and local cabbage [...]

Thursday, July 7th, 2011 Ate breakfast at 8:30 am, after 13.5 hours of fasting. Got about 10 hours of sleep overnight, almost unbroken (except for a brief get up from 5:10 to 5:20 am, during which time I decided to bail on surfing). Felt awesome. Wild Salmonberry from the margins of Oswald West State Park [...]

food journal 010-014 utter defeat

When I last updated this stupid food journal the VERY long (five day) Fourth of July weekend was just about to begin. Friday, July 1st was to have been day 10; today, Wednesday, July 6th would have been day 14. That’s a long cheat on a “warpath” that’s barely 2 weeks old. It also means [...]

food journal 008

I stopped eating about 11:00 pm on Tuesday. On Wednesday… Wednesday, June 29th, 2011. Yeah. I ignored my food journal all day on Wednesday, and have left the recording of what I ate until now, Thursday morning. Even though this post is published on Wednesday, I am actually writing it Thursday morning. One of the [...]

food journal 007

The fast from day six, with which Tuesday started, was going to be longer than normal anyway, to help me overcome jet-lag more quickly, by resetting my eating clock to west-coast time. But it grew extra prolonged as I refrained from eating, thinking that I would be eating breakfast out. By 8:00 am it was [...]

going hungry

Some Thoughts on the Benefits of Intermittent Fasting What little I understand of this subject is derived from my own research in the medical literature and also from I.F. gurus like Martin Berkhan and Brad Pilon. When I am being good, I maintain a pretty mellow practice of intermittent fasting. I try to enter a [...]
