Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

sunday walk

Sunday afternoon at the end of my rope, grading wise, I put my backpack on and left out of Dobra tea, to take about a 45 minute walk through downtown Asheville, consciously breathing through my nose in the stinging cold air, taking the light into my eyes, and seeing what I could see. When I [...]

away from the numbers

On Saturday I went out for about 45 minutes for a great ramble, down the street, under the bridge, across the creek, along the avenue, on the byways, through the woods behind the USDA research center, scrambling along and jumping over fallen logs, box jumping up rock walls, going over fences, balancing, leaping from object [...]

dead wed

I overcame a vicious night of caring for small sick JZ, to show up at 5:00 am for my regular workout. My left shoulder is killing me! Killing me. From Yoga on Monday. Damn yoga. Between that and my lack of sleep I had my excuse for skipping conditioning today. My 20 lbs per week [...]

Strength Day \• December 5, 2011

monday full and fierce

So, Monday was a full day. Ninety minutes of training and exercise in the morning at 5:00 am. Ninety minutes of evening Yoga practice at 6:00 pm. I woke up sore still from Saturday, and experienced the limits of my body and strength and recovery at ASC. And I hobbled into and out of Yoga [...]

missed friday, so, saturday will do

Saturday, Dec. 3rd, 2011 It wasn’t my fault that Friday morning a tree had fallen and blocked Patton AVE, leaving Asheville Strength and Conditioning inaccessible from ANY direction. I waited and waited in the dark of the DMV parking-lot, but the cops never opened up the street. So I got in my planned Friday workout, [...]
