Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

a rubicon of a monday

Week IX, Workout A Monday was something of a Rubicon day for me. My linear progression in the squat took me into heavy and serious territory for the first time. My work sets are now well over body weight, and on Monday, my 3 sets by 5 reps brought me to a weight that is [...]

a case of friday

Week VIII, Workout D Not sure why it happened; could have been Mike P’s bad attitude, or my underlying issues. By the end of this session I was in a dark, evil mental zone. I pulled it out later on, but, for a while there I felt like total shite. Which is funny because, looking [...]

wednesday squats

Week VIII, Workout C If you haven’t noticed… I’m on a roll with squats lately. The rest of what I’ve been doing is pretty must strictly rehab. I’m getting ready to EXPLODE back into full effort work in a few weeks time. Meantime, it’s rehab work and heavy squats. And the squats are starting to [...]

quick home workout on Monday

Week VIII, Workout B Not so much of a workout as an active rest day. I took the whole day on Sunday devoting it to the squat, so I needed Monday morning for some academic work. Instead of simply blowing off the day, though, in the early early morning I did some warm-up mobility work [...]

Sunday Squat Camp Workout

Week VIII, Workout A Squat Camp with Steve Hill was awesome. Lots of fun. And no, Brian, we didn’t get to make s’mores or tell ghost stories. But we did talk squat. And we squatted. I’ll spare you the details (except to say it was great) and just give you my numbers for the day. [...]
