Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

do that thing you do

Week V, Workout B Wednesday early AM, decent but admittedly too short sleep, I did a long workout, including plenty of warm-up, bilateral shoulder, forearm and wrist mobility, one arm squat, deadlift and bent over row, and even some ‘conditioning’ (but it was so lightweight… does it count? I wonder). Warm-Up: Airdyne 3 min. Jumprope [...]

power monday

Week V, Workout A Monday, I dragged myself to the gym. My sleep is totally out of whack. Got to figure that out. One Arm Squat: 3 x 95 / 3 x 135 / 2 x 5 x 165 / 10 x 165. The 10x set was clearly a PR for me. But I’m not [...]

one arm squat progress

Week IV, Workout C Friday AM I did a light warm-up (5 min on AirDyne, that’s about it), then squatted, then did some very light bi-lateral shoulder mobility work with the handle for the “rolling thunder.” Then I jump-roped for about 10 minutes. Light day… except for the squats. Squat: 5 x 95, 3 x [...]

six weeks later

Six weeks ago today I broke my left radius, and after several weeks off I started training again. If you’ve been reading this blog you’ve seen me struggling to make progress while using only one arm over the past month. Some days are better than others. Some days I have so much dull pain that [...]

sunday run

Week IV, Workout A Normally, a Sunday is a rest day for me but my endurance needs work, and my love handles are soft, so, a short run won’t hurt me, I figure. I took week III off of running, but week IV began with a slightly longer run than the runs I was doing [...]

saturday conditioning

Week III, Workout D I showed up mid morning at ASC on Saturday to check out the scene (so many people for our little gym!) and to get in some conditioning if possible. At some point, it became possible. I warmed up with jump rope and then did 5 rounds: 200 meter run 10 single [...]

friday squats and pulls

Week III, Workout C Friday morning, somehow I had turned off my alarm the night before, yet habit, thank God, woke me up at 5:15 am, which means I did make it to the gym on time to work with Mike P, who was late anyway. My warm-up was more or less identical to Wednesday’s: [...]
