Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

one arm and a few ideas

If you are in to powerlifting, strength training, CrossFit, or weightlifting, what exercises or workouts would you do if you had only one arm, or had lost the use of one arm for 4-5 months? Post ideas to comments.

a short not to say quick run

Week I, “workout” B In keeping with my recently conceived “plan” I started this morning with a dark, sluggish and groggy run of 1 mile (on B’way, to the citgo and back). I set out just after 5:10 am. The run took 9:38, much slower than the last mile I clocked for myself! My left [...]

food journal 054

Monday my food intake was a bit screwy. Early in the day (i.e. about 5:30 am) I started off with coffee and half and half. After my workout, before going to work, I had three eggs scrambled in coconut oil, plus a slice of cantaloupe. I also had a shake of milk, plain whey protein [...]

back to training

Week I, workout A. Well, this morning I am not sure I should dignify my efforts at ASC with the term “workout,” but I did break a sweat, raise my heart rate, and move my body through full range of motion while using some weights. I was really just trying to get a feel for [...]

food journal 053

Sunday I was only about 90% on my dietary plan. Breakfast was about eight am and consisted of three eggs skillet poached in oil (bacon drippings), two medium sized gluten free pancakes w/ butter and maple syrup, two strips of bacon and a small sausage patty. (The refined starches and maple syrup are off plan). [...]

post injury: new program and new plan

Ok. I was plugging along in my own, slow, dimwitted way, making progress, hitting PRs, getting stronger slowly but surely. I’ve been all too aware of my problems, limitations, weaknesses, persistent injuries, aches, and pains, and my imbalances, but none of it stopped me. A broken arm has stopped me. It’s been almost three weeks [...]

food journal 050-052

Concerning my diet on Aug. 11th, 12th, and 13th, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I could and should refer to this three day stretch as “Days of Gluten,” since, as it happens, I ate a gluten-filled meal for dinner each of the days. On each of these days I ate very low carb from breakfast until [...]

Concerning the anatomy of the Radius and Ulna

Skeletal anatomy of the arm (pictured: right arm, with supinated hand).Skeletal anatomy of the right hand.Schematic (overly simplified) drawing of skeletal anatomy of the forearms. So, because of breaking my left radius two weeks ago, I’ve been trying to educate myself about the treatment, healing, and rehabilitation of this particular injury. To my taste, no [...]

North Coast pipoboarding (skimboarding), and my broken arm (pix and vids)

This is a video and picture gallery of me “pipoboarding” (or “pypoboarding”), which is the old school term used on the North Coast (of Oregon) for skimboarding. All of the photos of actual pipoboarding come from mid to late July, 2011. Unfortunately, on Wednesday, July 27th, another beautiful pipoboarding session ended in disaster for me, [...]

walking

Not currently actively “training” while I recuperate from this broken arm, but I will record sessions that constitute deliberate attempts to stay active. So I’ve tried doing some “power walking” (aka “walking”) today and yesterday. 15 minutes yesterday. 23 minutes today. These felt good. Walking is enjoyable. I wore my splint during both sessions, and [...]
