About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

friday “conditioning” session

Friday afternoon, Robert Novy-Marx, who is probably my oldest friend, and also an independent CrossFitter, endurance athlete, and general badass, joined me for a crazy workout.

Warm-Up: 400 meter jog. Mobility.

Thrusters: 10 x 45 / 5 x 95

WOD: ‘Litinov’ Thrusters. 10 rounds of “max rep” Thrusters @ 135#, followed immediately by a 40 meter sprint, on timed 3 minute intervals.

Robert would do his Thrusters and take off on the sprint, then I would do mine and sprint, and so we wended our way through the workout in just under 27 minutes. Brutal. Robert did about twice as many Thrusters as I did, even though he is a few inches shorter and weighs more than 20 lbs less than me. Such is life. He is also better at math than me.

Result: 6 (PR!), 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 4 (fail on 5), 4, 4, 4 (47 reps). Fun workout. Very physically challenging.

Turns out that my previous 5 rep Thruster max was 125, so, on paper, I have a new 6 rep max. Since I did 47 reps at my “5 rep max” in one workout… I guess it’s time to shoot for a new Thruster PR. It should be more like 155.
