Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

Rainy Sore Morning

Rotten session. Trying to surf while suffering, without realizing it, from Giardia.

Deadlifts, shoulder press, 5+ mile slog, while sick

The surf is worthless right now: for the second day in a row winds are too high, wind waves are too high, and the swell is too big. I didn’t mind yesterday, since I was feeling sick, and was supposed to be resting anyway. Today, in spite of the fact that I’ve had, ahem, intestinal [...]

Riding the Greek at Arch Cape on Saturday

Surfing 05 On Friday, after surfing at Indian Beach, I stopped into Cannon Beach Surf, chatted for a few minutes with the owner, Mark, and the other guy working there at the time (nice guy, bald, veteran, didn’t catch his name). There’s this green 7′ 2″ shortie board by the Greek (Bob Bolen) that I’ve [...]

Seven Foot Junk; Squats and Clean and Jerks (i/iv of 5-3-1)

Surfing 04: Indian Beach I got in a nice little session from 9:30 to 11:00 am today at Indian Beach. Conditions were definitely better than yesterday, although NOAA was reporting 3 foot wind waves and 7 foot NW swell, at 8 seconds, with 10-15 knot winds. The result should have been junky, and junky it [...]

Fractal Surf, Chaos, Madness, Fun

Surfing 03: Short Sand beach at Smuggler Cove If you can call it surfing! It was great to be back in Oswald West State Park on Thursday morning, even if the wind was blowing at 20 knots, even if the rain was coming down in a steady drip, even if wind waves were crossing the [...]

Rainy Day Deadlifts, Presses, and Snatches; My Summer Strength Cycle

Monsoon like weather kept me from the ocean today. Tomorrow awaits for more surfing. So I did yardwork and lifting. Warm-Up Yardwork, especially pruning of trees; a lot of overhead work with large pruning shears, and raking and dragging of debris with a set of prongs. I also cut down a tree with a chainsaw. [...]

Sand Everywhere

Surfing 02: Indian Beach Tue AM A little past nine AM I showed up at Indian Beach again… did I mention to my non-Oregonian readers that this was the location for the beach scene in Twilight? It’s a great beach, with a dramatic setting between a rock-island lighthouse on the north end and a beautiful [...]

The Cred and Various Squats

A second workout this week (not including the three days of fishing), this time at the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland, OR. I did 5 x 5 of dumbbell one arm power snatches, followed by some quick and dirty work with a 40 kg bar, on back squats, front squats, and overhead squats. Training Cycle: [...]
