Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

A Greater High

Is there a greater high than working hard and sweating your butt off? Somehow I think not.

Horrible sleep last night. But it didn’t seem to matter. No breakfast. But the coffee and chocolate got me through. I went to the 6:00 am class at CrossFit Asheville and had a great time today.

Warm-Up

Footwork, bodywork, cones. Stretching. Push-Ups (10 diamond, 15 regular), Sit-Ups (25), Overhead Squats (10)… no time for rope climb or pull-ups, but see my skill work for today.

Skill/Strength: Thrusters

I was not working for a PR today, but to overcome deficiencies in form. I needed to make sure I didn’t get the “butt wink” at the bottom of my front squats, and for the most part I was a good boy, and I didn’t. Thanks, Corey, for your spotting and feedback. Nevertheless I did achieve a new PR!

Results: 10 x PVC / 7 x 45 / 5 x 65 / 5 x 85 / 5 x 95 (tie with previous PR from June 8th) / 5 x 105 (new PR)

WOD: The Great Heights

Complete as many rounds as possible in 12 minutes of:
15 Ball slams
9 pull-ups
7 high box jumps (28″/24″ or whatever if challenging but allows you to be confident that you can get up there!)

I set up my 20″ box with two 45 lbs. plates and one 35 lbs. plate, together about 10″… so let’s call my box 30″. No bands, in accord with my recent forswearing of them; I mostly did sets of 3 pull-ups, big kips, chest to bar. Used whatever ball was handy during the somewhat chaotic WOD (usually the 12 lbs ball).

Result: SIX ROUNDS.

Rosh Ha Shana: Cheat Day?

Our family joined Tamara’s for Rosh Ha Shana dinner at her house, and for me the day became an unintentional cheat day. I exceeded my planned calorie count by about 1200 calories (4100 as opposed to 2900), drank too much, and also ate “forbidden” foods: sweet Challa bread, wheat crackers, cream cheese, honey, and Kugel (basically Jewish noodle pudding). Naughty! This wasn’t a planned cheat, and it did not involve excessive amounts of, say, sugar. But when I totaled up the calories I was a bit surprised by how excessive the day really had been. It will throw off the average daily calories consumed for the entire “cutting” week, pushing the week’s average back into “building” territory. Which means… I am not sure what. It had been almost two weeks since my last official cheat day, and I have 16 days until my next one. I suspect I will just have to forgive myself and move on.
