Cheat Days \• July 19, 2009
Two weeks into a five week summer surfing adventure, I start coming to grips with some new (old) bad habits and deficiencies. Sugar. Ice cream. Meal frequency. But so far, no serious problems with my body composition. In fact, I’m losing weight. Must be all the surfing. Outdoor Recreation \• July 19, 2009
Saturday, July 18th: The Morning Session Yesterday morning the surf report from NOAA was pretty favorable, although the visible appearance of the sea was not too desirable. Desperate to surf, I headed to Short Sand Beach in Smuggler Cove, a little bit later than usual. I left out at 7:17, and worked my ass off [...] Cheat Days \• July 17, 2009
No surfing, but a nice hard workout and a beautiful day for an eerie trip into the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge on my Kayak. Followed by an evening binge on banana ice cream and chocolate. Active Rest \• July 16, 2009
Climb a mountain on a beautiful sunny day. Burn yourself out. Drink beer with lunch and pass out. Eat a ton. Forget to record what you eat and drink. Trade offs. Outdoor Recreation \• July 15, 2009
I wanted to call this post “iterruption” but I figured that most people would just assume that I accidentally dropped the “n” in interruption. The word “iterruption” combines interruption with iteration. When I think back about today these two themes, iteration and interruption, dominate my thoughts, and make me think about the how both repetitive [...] CrossFit Mothership WODS \• July 14, 2009
Don’t Give Up the Fight I had a great workout today. It was my first real workout in a whole week, since I did “Neoprene” last Tuesday. I gave this WOD a name of my own, even though it is a classic and official “mothership” WOD, because it seems to me that the WOD is [...] Active Rest \• July 14, 2009
Sunday, July 12th: Visit from the Kuhne’s I took Sunday as a rest day from working out or surfing… that seemed like a reasonable plan after four surfing sessions in three days (two on Thursday, one Friday, one Saturday) and a 5k run that had left me with almost crippling soreness in my calves (Saturday). [...] Outdoor Recreation \• July 11, 2009
On this gray, misty, damp morning, the winds were quiet but the sea still looked rather white and forbidding, leftover chop and mess from yesterday. But Sean and I left out of the house at about 6:00 am anyway and headed to Smuggler’s Cove. I was reassured by the tranquil walk down the trail to [...] Cheat Days \• July 10, 2009
Sean McEnroe, Ben Walsh and I made it into the vehicle by about 6:00 am this morning and headed to Smuggler’s Cove. We were alone in the water. Partially cloudy skies, no wind, small surf, extreme low tide. We were the first ones to arrive and had the spot to ourselves the whole time. A [...] Outdoor Recreation \• July 9, 2009
This morning’s surf conditions: SW WIND 10 KT…BECOMING N IN THE AFTERNOON. WIND WAVES 1 FT. SW SWELL 4 FT AT 12 SECONDS…SHIFTING TO THE NW 5 FT AT 8 SECONDS. This description leaves out the part about being alone in the water in Smuggler’s Cove as the sun breaks over the hills at 6:15 [...] |
