Training Board is about…

Weightlifting, nutrition, paleolithic and "Zone" dieting, weight loss, my workouts, and reflections and reviews of various related topics that interest me. But mostly, I just use this blog to track my workouts.

If anything I have posted seems useful to you, let me know with a comment.

About Me

I'm a level I "sports performance certified" USAW coach, and I train, and work as an assistant coach at Asheville Strength and Conditioning, a great little gym here in Asheville, N.C.

I work with clients who want to get strong and fit, and specialize in helping older, detrained individuals reclaim their fitness and youthful athleticism.

Also, it should be said that I used to train with, and still love many of the folks down at CrossFit Asheville. A lot of the older portions of this blog deals with CrossFit and reflects my earlier fascination with CrossFit's "fitness as sport" model of training. I've learned a lot from CrossFit since I first discovered it, back in late 2008, even though my own training is now more focused on developing pure strength and capacity in the basic strength lifts.

WOD: nine hour fast in airplane seat. PUC Day 17, part I.

Travel Day I can’t see calling this a “rest day” since I traveled several thousand miles on foot, subways, train, plane, and car. Most of the day was spent crammed into a narrow plane seat in a “stress position.” And I had only 3 hours of sleep. And had been out late drinking at the [...]

Snatches of Bethnal Green.

A strength day, combined with a “rest day.”  Is that possible?  I will rest from the PUC today (and tomorrow will be day 17).  I will of course ride my bike all over London.  I’ve already put in about 45 minutes on it. Bethnal Green Weightlifting Club Me with Giles Greenwood (left), Andrew Stemler (right) [...]

"Primrose Hill." PUC Day 15 & 16. Biking in London.

Warm Up A light bike ride to the gym, and then, having dropped off my stuff, from the gym to the bottom of Primrose Hill, which is the north end of Regent’s Park in London. I made my way to an exercise area called “Trim Trail,” which is a place with permanent installations for pull-ups [...]

Bench and Row. PUC Skipped Day.

My trip to London has been great. I bought a one week membership at a little gym right on Belsize Park Gardens, about 2 blocks from Gadi and Mimi’s place. They have Concept II rowers and some crappy olympic weights, so I decided to do the WOD from the mainsite that was posted for Monday: [...]

"Camden Roundabout." PUC Day 14.

WOD: repair a bike, do some sprints, do pull ups, and box jumps, for “time.” I borrowed Guy’s (Guy is cousin Adi’s boyfriend) broken down “Chicago” brand bike. Fixed the rear brake last night. Then today, walked it up to a petrol station and filled the tires. Then I rode the bike in Camden, up [...]

Rest Days \• May 17, 2009

Travel Day. In London. Resting.

Currently tired and jet-lagged from my flight. About to take a nap. This morning I took a walk in Primrose Hill with uncle Gadi. Very interesting. Beautiful to see the city from there. I will soon visit more. But until then, rest. After the nap, I turned the day into an “active rest” day, with [...]

"The Midwest Regional Support WOD." PUC Day 13.

Decent sleep, about 7.5 hours, but interrupted at 3:30 am for a pee. 1.5 block breakfast. Then the 9:00 am CrossFit Asheville workout. It was a small crowd today, just Shalene, David, Tom, Randy and myself. The WOD is designed to support, spiritually, Shanna Duvall at the CrossFit Reigional Qualifiers. We wish you the best, [...]

"Cindy." PUC Day 12.

6 hours of uninterrupted (!) sleep. Pretty good. 1 block breakfast (one boiled egg, 2/5 banana). Coffee w/ milk. Water. Then hit the 6:00 am workout at CrossFit Asheville. Warm Up Pretty typical agility drills, plus a round of push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, squats (12 reps each). Shoulder dislocates and Sampson/hip mobility stretching. 8 of my [...]

day of recuperation

Today I am just handling paperwork and other things I need to do around the house. I am going out of town next week — a short trip to London, believe it or not, to run a family related errand for my elderly mother-in-law — and my workout schedule promises to be a bit disrupted. [...]

"Bear Hug." PUC Day 11.

Decent sleep, from 11:45 pm to 5:00 am. Obviously, not enough sleep. I need to do better there. It’s forcing myself to go to bed early that is tough. One block breakfast. Then, the 6:00 am CrossFit Asheville workout. Warm Up Basic Agility drills; shoulder dislocates; hip-mobility stretches; 1 round of: Push-ups, Sit-ups, Squats, Pull-Ups. [...]
